People copying from your website?

Posted on Thursday 8 June 2006

Unfortunately, Content theft is an annoying factor for website owners these days. The more popular your website gets, the more people get to see it, and some of those people are unethical content thieves. It’s one thing to study your competition and get ideas from them, but when you start copying your competitor’s text content, or even worse stealing the look of the site it just becomes a headache for all. Many sites that have Copyright protection can of course pursue legal action against copy thieves.

Many content thieves don’t think you can find them on the web, but you can - there are many tools out there that let you search and identify sites that have copied from you, one such site is www.copyscape.com

Having problems with your site being copied and not sure how to deal with it? Use a tool like copyscape.com, once you’ve identified some copiers, email the site owners and ask them to remove copied content immediately. This usually works for most, if it doesn’t you can seek legal action.

Of course, these thief’s are not always as clever as they think, some think if you are ranked high in the search engines it’s for your content and how it’s written, so if they copy it they think they will rank high - any SEO expert of course would laugh at people doing this as it simply doesn’t work this way, keyword rich content helps of course but it’s just a small portion of real SEO work. Also, content thieves sometimes don’t even realize copying content can actually hurt there site rankings as many search engines can identify copied content and sometimes de-rank you for it. All in all, copying content is just not a smart thing to do.
