Marketing Plan for your website

Posted on Thursday 27 January 2000

If you have a car you want to sell, would you just leave it in your driveway and hope for the best, or would you perhaps put some ads in the newpaper, stick a ‘for sale sign on it’, park it at the mall for exposure at weekends, and maybe also tell your friends your selling it? Well, that’s what you need to do for your website.

A website without a marketing plan may just become another needle in the haystack. It is of upmost importance that you market your website and create a Marketing Plan. The website will not market itself - you are probably competing against thousands or even millions of other websites, relying on your website to make money without a marketing plan is not going to work.

A good Marketing Plan should include Onsite and Offsite marketing. Here are a few ideas to get your website more traffic/visitors:

1. Press Releases
2. Radio Ads
3. TV Ads
4. Newpapers Ads
5. Blogs/News (Syndicate / RSS Feeds)
6. Search Engine Submission
7. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
8. Join Forums and Newsgroups
9. Add website URL on biz cards (email signatures, letterhead, envelopes)
10. Get brandable hats, t-shirts for employees
11. Create Flyers/Brochures
12. Join PPC (Pay Per Click) Networks for sponsored search engine listings
13. Advertise on other websites (banner ads, text ads)
14. Email Newsletters
15. Create Special Offers and Incentives.

A marketing plan should consist of many different avenues to market your site and marketing should be performed on a monthly basis. Contacting a PR or Marketing firm to help you get started would be a smart move. If you’re on a limit budget and want to market the site on your own time, I would recommend signing up for PPC’s first (like adwords.google.com), that can give you instant exposure in sponsored results in search engines (if you bid the right keywords at the right price that is).

Good Luck!
