As a web designer I am often asked this question….
Q: I have a new website, when will i see my site on page 1 of the search engine?
or sometimes this question…
Q: I’ve submitted my site to the search engines, when will i see my site on page 1 of the search engine?
It’s important to understand having a website designed and put live on the web is just the first step, getting high organic search rankings is another step/service called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which your web designer may or may not provide.
As you probably know, there are millions of Web sites out there today, and the total number of pages in those sites is in the billions. If you’ve had your site submitted to the search engines through a search engine submission service, you can probably find your site on page 1 easily after you’ve been listed if you do a search on your actual domain name (yoursite.com) or do a search on your business name ‘Joe Blog ABC Accounting LLC’ may show your site on page 1 or 2 of results. But the majority of Web surfers looking for stuff these days are typing in search phrases commonly known as keywords or keyword phrases. It is important to understand that submitting a website to the search engines does not guarantee you 1st page placement or high rankings on search results for keywords you’d like to be found under. Let’s take a realistic look at this…there are only 10 positions to get on page 1 of a search engine and most likely several thousands of competing websites fighting for page 1 placement. For example, if you do a search on the keyword phrase accounting services in Google, you’ll see 10 results come up on page 1, but notice in the top right of the Google page you’ll see a blue shaded line that says something like ‘Results 1 - 10 of about 136,000,000 for accounting services. (0.26 seconds)’.
Ok, so if you’re an accountant and want people to find your website using the keyword phrase ‘accounting services’ and you want to be on page 1 of the natural free search results then you are competing against 136,000,000 other related pages. As you can see, submitting your site to search engines for inclusion is important but getting to page one requires much more work, you will need to fight the competition and have a good solid SEO (search engine optimization) plan to work with. The amount you will need to compete to get to page 1 really can vary depending on how popular your service or product is and the keyword phrases you study and select to target. (example targeting keyword phrase ‘Accounting Services in Maryland’ is an easier target keyword than ‘Accounting Services’ and ‘Watch Repair Shop in Virginia’ is an easier target keyword than ‘Watches’). If you are ready for the challenge of getting higher rankings I can provide you with a customized SEO Plan quote, just let me know.
Additionally, you can also think about getting paid inclusions (PPC), this is where you can come up on sponsored results on page one for a Pay Per Click (PPC) fee, the price per click differs based on the highest bid of competitors, your results won’t come up in the natural search engine areas, instead you’ll come up in ’sponsered’ areas normally of which are positioned to left of the page. Google is a good engine to start a pay per click campaign with, you can read about it more here: www.enicola.com for questions on Web Design and SEO services.
