Disable Smart Tags

Posted on Thursday 3 May 2007

Microsoft’s ‘Smart Tags’ feature allows the IE browser to identify words or phrases within any web page and dynamically link them to other sites (yes, even your competitor sites). Although Microsoft says this feature is not automatically enabled in the IE Browser, the fact is, some surfers may have it enabled and not even know what it is! Potential uses include providing a Smart Tag link on a phrase of your website text and ’smart’ linking it to point to a word definition, or pointing to suppliers of a product related to a word, or to simply divert users to other sites to increase their traffic.

As you can imagine, this feature has had many site owners upset because smart tags places these links without the site owners’ consent. Smart Tags are for MS Internet Explorer Browser (versions MSIE 6.0 and up).

The Good News: Fortunately, there is a way out to stop this happening to your webpage, it’s thru a the use of a Meta Tag in your HTML code, you should place it between the section of the code, the tag basically commands the IE browser to disable the smart tag feature on loading of your webpage by saying Prevent Smart Tag =True (preventing it to load) Here’s the Tag:

< meta Name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE" />
