CAPTCHA for your Web Forms

Posted on Friday 4 July 2008

All of you have encountered with a box highlighting some distorted numbers or alphabets while completing a payment transaction or submitting a website in a directory or search engine like Google, which is nothing but CAPTCHA. CAPTCHA  is primarily used to stop automated submission or SPAM and the distorted figures coming on top of a box with a background image/ color become illegible by the spammer.

Its an high level of programming, which displays the number or letters in a random manner to confuse the spammer. There are many such programs readily available all over the Internet for your usage. You need to define certain parameters for an optimal use. Parameters are the number of letters/ numbers to be displayed and you may choose any combination between pure number, pure alphabet, mix of number and alphabet. When the CAPTCHA is displayed, the user needs to be very careful, as the characters are displayed in a distorted format. In generic conditions the number of characters to be keyed in are restricted between 5 to 8. The mix of number and alphabets make the CAPTCHA more secured.

Now, where and when should one use CAPTCHA ? If you feel that your website has become popular and having drawn considerable attention of the spammers and hackers, CAPTCHA is the best way to safeguard the submission in your website. If your site allows submission of other websites/ blogs/ articles, its safe to use Captcha. If your website is of e-commerce type and authorizes payment transactions, then CAPTCHA is a must. You can even use CAPTCHA for comments fields or even feedback forms.
Use CAPTCHA, safeguard your website from automated submission and spammers!
